Scientific name:
Stachys cooleyae General: Perennial from rhizomes; stems erect, leafy, mostly unbranched, square in cross-section, bristly-hairy on the angles, 70-150 cm tall.
Leaves: Opposite, deltoid or heart-egg-shaped, long-hairy on both sides, stalked, coarsely blunt-toothed, 6-15 cm long.
Flowers: Deep red-purple, hairy, 23-40 mm long, stalkless; sepals united in a tube with 5 spine-tipped lobes; petals fused into a 2-lipped tube, the lower lip 3-lobed; 4 stamens; 4-lobed ovary; several to many in open terminal clusters.
Fruits: 4 nutlets.
Ecology: Moist roadsides, clearings, thickets and open woods; common at low elevations.
