Common Plantain

Scientific name:
Plantago major

See Ribwort (English Plantain).

Common plantain is another introduced weed that is even more widespread than Ribwort. Common plantain is common throughout our region in disturbed areas. It has large, broadly elliptic to egg-shaped leaves with strong parallel veins. It is uncertain whether common plantain is a native or introduced species in North America. Eastern North American native people reportedly named it 'white man's foot' because they were not familiar with the plant prior to contact with white Europeans.
